Guard Your Eyes
Have you not seen? Have you not noticed what people are wearing these days? Perhaps I should say what they are not wearing. It becomes increasingly difficult to guard your eyes every moment of every day. Wherever you look, you see both male and female, both adults and young people who are dressed more provocatively. Where does the problem lie? You might say, and I have heard it said, “this is the only clothes I can find to purchase” – “it’s the latest style”. On the other hand, the vendors indicate they are only giving the consumer what they want. I believe both are at fault: the vendors can give more choices to those who wish to dress decently and the consumer should not purchase any clothing that would entice others to look at them unrighteously.
Dear Christian I believe this will not change as the world enters the Great Tribulation, so you must learn to guard your eyes. And this is possible with the Lord’s help. Both your eyes and your mind must be disciplined. What your eye sees and what your mind dwells on even for a split second can cause you great trouble. It can lead you down a path of sexual immorality and adultery. Our Lord told us that if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out, it’s better to enter heaven blind than to enter hell with both eyes. The point is you cannot use your eye as an excuse for sinning. He also indicated that if you looked at a woman (or man) to undress them in your mind then you have already committed adultery with that person.
So what can you do to guard your eyes? Two things. First, when our eye falls upon any unrighteous thing and that includes men or women dressed inappropriately or that may appeal to your inner sex drive then you must immediately look in a different direction and not look back! To look back is dangerous and will in the end cause you more harm than good. On the other hand, if the individual is attempting to engage you in conversation or you sincerely wish to communicate with them then you must make only eye contact and continue to guard your eyes in the process. Once you have turned your eyes away to a safer location, then you must concern yourself with the second discipline – the mind.
Secondly, we must realize that the mind is quick, and it can process information very fast. To allow the mind to dwell even for a split second on the other individual who is dressed provocatively will feed your old nature, awaken your sexual drive, and lead you down a very dangerous path. So again, this calls for discipline. Immediately begin to think about something else. It may be helpful to think upon the Cross of Jesus Christ – to think about Him hanging there for your sins and paying the price for your unrighteousness. If necessary, think about the other person as your sister or your brother and not as an object for sexual lust. Furthermore, television displays many unrighteous things, including men and women dressed provocatively, which appeals to the inner sex drive – the best thing to do is turn it off!
